Odds & Ends are frothing to bring you their latest single and an oversized release party at the Tuning Fork! This genre blender, called Something Else, balances on a tightrope between indie-rock and alternative pop and if you’ve seen the band perform live, you know the outro is their favourite part.
“I found the drum recording we did back in 2018 with Paddy Hill at Roundhead Studios and thought, ‘shit, these sound pretty good!’” explains the band’s frontman and recording engineer Koen Aldershof. “Building the rest of the track around these killer sounding drums was almost easy. Something Else might be our favourite song to play live so we know it inside out. Recording every little detail felt so natural and was a ton of fun.”
After all the parts were recorded in various studios and home studios around Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, the band mixed and mastered the single and got it ready for release. “It’s pretty awesome to see we can record, mix and master it all ourselves,” says bass player and mix engineer Jonathan Meyer. “There are so many different layers and sounds that make up the whole song. This one is full of ear candy.”
“With the pandemic, everyone’s gotten really used to working from home,” notes the band's drummer and master engineer Max Earnshaw. “It felt super easy sending different versions and files across to the band. It really felt like we were in the same room, listening to the same thing and finishing the song together.”
But while there are silver linings in the current circumstances, things are tough for everyone, musicians least of all. The band has had to postpone this release and show, time after time. The song was originally set to release in November last year.
“It’s pretty tough trying to plan shows and recordings, let alone tours in the current situation. We have enough material for an album, but with everything going on in the world, taking up so much brainpower, it’s hard to know where to start,” says Koen. “Everyone in the creative industry is constantly crossing their fingers, hoping that plans can go ahead. It takes a lot of passion, sweat, and tears for these songs to land where they do, even before Covid makes it harder. I suppose we’re all going through the same thing and we’ve heard it all before, so I am trying to lift everyone up around me and take the days as they come.”
The band’s last single Picture, which was released in August last year, reached some new milestones for the band. It saw success debuting at number 8 in the Top 20 NZ singles chart and at number 37 on the Top 40 singles chart. Unfortunately, its all-ages release show was cancelled due to another Covid lockdown.
The lockdown did, however, give the band the opportunity to plan their biggest show yet. Odds & Ends will hit the stage at the iconic Tuning Fork in Tāmaki Makaurau to celebrate the release of their new singles. This promises to be an epic all-ages show with support from more locals Flaxxies, Borderline and Coast Arcade. Tickets will be available next week but you can RSVP to the event here.
