Music For Sun And Salt: Flaxxies Release Sophomore EP Beach Rudes + Announce Show Dates

Rising Auckland surf-rock and reggae band Flaxxies continue to impress with their latest music release – 4 tracks of energetic and soulful tunes on their sophomore effort Beach Rudes.

Flaxxies fuse chilled out surf-rock and reggae vibes creating a hybrid of escapist tunes brimming with raw energy and creative jams. Like most Kiwis, the guys live for the summer, taking in numerous trips to the beach where special memories are made hanging out as a band - surfing, chilling, and writing music. Beach Rudes is a tribute to those evocative experiences and treasured times.

Comprised of 5 high-school friends, this indie ‘band of brothers’ have cultivated a deep mate-ship over the years, based on a strong musical connection and a collective passion for song-writing and performance.

Fronted by Benji Humphries [vocals] with Nick Tait [rhythm guitar], Eric Goodger [lead guitar], Chris Manning [bass] and Jayden Welsh [drums], Flaxxies channel a powerful sound from a broad sphere of local and international influences, which drives their dedication to delivering the adrenaline-charged live performances they are fast garnering a reputation for.

“Our music is a bit of a dichotomy; on one hand, we have beachy, chilled-out songs with hard-hitting messages, and on the other hand we have energetic rock songs with more obscure and veiled meanings. We hope that this allows our listeners to relate to, and explore some of the more sensitive topics we cover, but also just to rock out, have a great time and dance with us!”

Written as a charming and insightful musical reflection upon teenage-hood and the journey through adolescence, through this EP Flaxxies shine a light on the various mental health struggles, breakups, and family situations which have affected them along the way.

Recorded at The Lab in Mount Eden with the talented Olly Harmer once again behind the board as producer/engineer, Beach Rudes marks a creative high for this young group. Focus track Lot 61  is the second single to be released and a follow up to energetic EP opener and live favourite King Of The Reef .

A vibrant radio-friendly earworm with a slappin’ bassline and surf-rock reggae rhythm, Lot 61 is an emotional response to leaving the city and seeking nature and good people in order to find inner peace and personal well-being.

Lot 61 discusses the battle of mental health and personal insecurities that affect so many people. The lyrics encourage people to let go of anything that may be putting them in a hard place or a difficult situation and to take the time to immerse themselves into whatever they love, so their journey to happiness can truly begin”, says the band.

Despite the serious nature of its lyrical content, the cruisy surf vibe of Lot 61 will no doubt ensure this tune will find a happy home on numerous escapist summer road-trip playlists.

Now that Beach Rudes is finally out for all to hear, Flaxxies look forward to performing the songs live to a growing audience base on their Boycott The Candy Shop tour with fellow bands Albert Street and Marmalade Skies, hitting Raglan tomorrow night, before taking in Hamilton and Tauranga and finishing up in Auckland.

“We want to share positive energy with people and come together as one to have a good time where they can reflect, sing, dance and let go of everything to enjoy themselves for a moment, and hopefully walk away feeling a little better about themselves.”
