In Aotearoa New Zealand, 10-Year-Old Kids Can Be Prosecuted And Punished For A Crime.
This sounds outrageous, but it is true and due to our minimum age of criminal responsibility being only 10 years old. When children this young are forced through criminal proceedings at such a formative age, they can suffer lasting and immense harm - to their health, well-being, and future.
The UN has said that 14 should be the absolute minimum age of criminal responsibility. Aotearoa New Zealand has fallen behind international standards, and the government has the responsibility to change this. We are telling them to action this UN recommendation and uphold the declaration of children’s rights that they signed. Let’s help the children of Aotearoa with therapeutic and culturally appropriate support that addresses the causes behind their behaviour.
On Sunday 22 January Valhalla will be hosting a community of esteemed hip hop locals to raise awareness of Amnesty International’s petition. Join Turner Knows, Mr. Lyrickah, and MJ Johnstone among others in a room of empowered music and help create momentum behind this call to action.
