Misty's Mystique is the first of a run of singles for the band to be released from their forthcoming sophomore EP, Fool Me Twice. Their second collaboration with producer Connor Jaine, the Fools have honed in to provide a first taste of the next breed of New Zealand Indie music.
Kicking off with a snarky guitar lick, the song was incubated from a long pocketed chord sequence courtesy of Mark Horner - former Fool’s Lagoon/Mako Road drummer and co-songwriter of NZ indie staples The Sun Comes Up and Brodie Street. It is propelled by the syncopated stabs of the rhythm section and wraps around with a descending jazzy breakdown to deliver the climactic keyboard solo.
With lyrical content mining inspirations from life partners, Tinder matches, and a cat that lends her name to the title, Misty’s Mystique provides listeners with a venture into a world of alluring contradictions and specific yet strangely familiar anecdotes. It opens a little window into love, lifestyle and values of young adulthood in the twenty twenties.
The song was recorded in a pop-up studio in Auckland’s Eastern Bays and neatly finished on the other side of the world with a tight master courtesy of Metropolis Studios (UK). Misty delivers you layers of clean harmonies and CJ’s production ear-candy which will have her mystique up and out and wrapped around of your heart.
Fool’s Lagoon are performing and recording human music for movers & shakers. Proudly representing four corners of Te Ika-a-Māui and beyond from their base in Auckland, FL packages their indelible new/old school sound with a lick of zilennial nostalgia - something somewhere in between Generation Millennial and Generation Z. They build from the storied kiwi indie scene, injecting elements of funk, dance and rock from decades been and gone to cut their own groove in Aotearoa’s musical record.
The Fools have gotten into a habit of getting heard around New Zealand - playing live from Auckland through Wellington and getting regular spins on Taranaki and Auckland radio. Their tongue in cheek attitude and professional packaging invite you to take their non-seriousness seriously, as their irresistible live performances and maverick musical style are an earworm that you won’t hear anywhere else in the NZ scene.
The Fools are saying fucnk it and are going all in, supporting this ice-breaking release with their first headline show on June 30th at K Road’s own Anthology Lounge. With opening performances supporting Aotearoa bands Midwave Breaks, Coast Arcade and Tahini Bikini under their belts, it’s time to show Tāmaki Makaurau how to Fool around - for real.
