K M T P shares new single 'Walk Out To Space', announces October tour of Aotearoa

27 July 2023 - 0 Comments

K M T P is the musical project of Keria Paterson (Te Arawa, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāi Tahu, they/them), a musician and songwriter currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Before starting K M T P, Paterson spent the majority of their time behind the drum kit, performing in groups like Polyester, Dirty Pixels and more recently Dead Famous People.

Their debut EP was made by curating jangly guitars, melodic casio keyboards and earnest storytelling. In the three years since K M T P have cranked it up, letting listeners lose themselves in smooth layers of distortion and fuzz, all the while keeping sincere songwriting firmly at the core.

Today K M T P shares a new single and video for Walk Out To Space, the second track from their debut album With Love, K M T P (released on Vinyl LP, Cassette and Digitally on September 28 via Sunreturn).
K M T P also announces a tour of Aotearoa to celebrate - tickets are available now through Undertheradar.

Walk Out To Space was recorded at Jonathan Pearce’s (The Beths) studio by Peter Ruddell (Wax Chattels, Sulfate). Beginning with just a drum beat and bass riff, K M T P layers melody and jangly fuzz to craft a near perfect indie rock sound.

“I wrote Walk Out To Space at a time when I was super busy creatively but also had really bad burnout,” says Paterson. “I was diving into some new creative endeavours when I hit a bit of a roadblock and had a meltdown. The song was a product of those emotions, and the lyrics conflict weirdly with the instrumentation, which I really like. I wanted the song to feel upbeat and energetic, even if the lyrics were fairly depressing.”

“I think my favourite lyric from the track is the one where I pulled the title from, ‘I wish that I could walk out to space…’ I often think about how easy it would be if we could walk out to space and just get away from life on earth. I think at the time I also meant it metaphorically, and have an almost external analysis on my own life, but also life on earth in general. But mostly, I think space would be such a peaceful place to just spend time alone and focus on yourself."

Walk Out To Space is accompanied with a slick music video, shot in Paterson’s Morningside flat. “I am super grateful to have my good friend Luke Penney film a music video for this track. I came to him quite late in the album’s release asking if he could make a super casual video, and he came back with some super cool ideas. Something simple with shooting in my room and at my flat was actually fitting to the themes in the song,” says Paterson.

Walk Out To Space is the second single from their debut album With Love K M T P, available on Limited Edition Vinyl LP, Cassette and Digitally on September 28 via Sunreturn.
