Summer Thieves Release New Album 'Cigarettes In Space'

Summer Thieves+ are thrilled to announce the release of their eagerly awaited new album, Cigarettes In Space, out today.

With an eclectic blend of infectious melodies and genre-bending sounds, the impressive 13-track album effortlessly weaves together vibrant indie rock with elements of pop, and heartfelt lyricism. Detailing nights out, lost loves, yearning and escapism, Cigarettes In Space is a collection of odes to your late 20's/early 30's; finding and losing love, as well as finding and losing yourself, are themes which prevail throughout the entire record.

“The album is a bit of a journey,” says Summer Thieves. “It definitely has some of the strongest songs we’ve done to date, and feels like it’s a release that we’ve been building towards with everything that’s come before. We’ve really put everything into this album from the past two years.”

Made with support from NZ On Air, the album was produced and recorded largely by the band themselves.

“We had a few people help us get this one polished, Allister Meffan is someone we worked with - he’s a really talented guy who gets our sound,” says Summer Thieves. “Matt Sadgrove (Sons of Zion) and TIki Taane also worked on a few tracks with us, who we’ve also worked closely with for a while. We’ve got really good working relationships with everyone, they all feel like family. Connor Jaine (Mako Road) helped us mix and polish a few of the tracks.”

The album’s title, taken from today’s focus single Bali Nights, details a hedonistic trip to Indonesia, and speaks to not the act of smoking Cigarettes In Space, but to a state of being truly lost.

“Getting lost in my head, out in space, smoking cigarettes” are the lyrics; we like to think we’ve always been a bit of a spacey band, and it’s a term that we think captures the vibe of the album, and a bit of our vibe,” explains Summer Thieves. “The single is all about getting lost in Bali and having one of those nights… which I’m sure a lot of our fans can identify with!”

Bali Nights joins the string of singles released in the lead up to the album, including Funny How The Mind Works, Tongue & Cheek, Slow Down, Sunshine; tracks which have received widespread media support from the likes of ZM, The Edge, Rolling Stone, Juice TV and more. Notably, Funny How The Mind Works reached #2 on the Hot 20 NZ Singles chart and #14 on the Radioscope NZ chart.

Cigarettes In Space showcases a band who are not only continuing to grow as musicians, but also as songwriters and producers. One of Aotearoa’s hardest working bands continue to prove themselves, with this new album embracing rock, alternative and pop sounds. The album sees the band pushing their sounds further than before, while staying true to what has brought them this far, keeping their tongue firmly in cheek as they do it.

Available now digitally and on limited edition vinyl, Cigarettes In Space also showcases the brilliant artwork from frequent collaborator Ray Lalatoa. Summer Thieves have two headline shows booked to support the album release - Meow in Wellington on Saturday September 9 (with support from Will McLean) and an Auckland show at the iconic Powerstation on Friday September 15 (with special guests PARK RD and The Dawns). It is going to be one hell of a ride for Summer Thieves and their fans!
