Pōneke indie pop artist Danica Bryant delivers the new single 'Libra'

15 September 2023 - 0 Comments

Danica Bryant (she/her) is a songwriter and producer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington).

Bryant crafts effortless pop music that delivers fun, catchy hooks that are always centered by an emotional core. Bryant has had many early wins, releasing two EPs (2020’s Cider, and 2022’s Ego Death), supported Elton John in 2020 at the Mission Estate Winery and being mentored by Bic Runga as a part of Smokefree Rockquest. Danica was an early adopter of TikTok and has amassed over 17K followers and over 2.5M likes in just under two years.

Today Danica Bryant shares Libra, a new single that plays with astrology, tarot cards, rising moons and birth charts. Libra was made with support from NZ On Air Music.

Out the gate Libra delivers a massive hook, a hallmark of a musician who can craft a deceptively effortless pop song. It's playful, satirical, and so cathartic.

“I think the best pop is catchy and fun for the purpose of making its emotion all the more hard-hitting,” says Bryant. “Pop that pushes the boundaries, whether that be through sonic experimentation alongside the usual modern sounds, or through exploring a relatable topic from a unique perspective, always stands out as making the best use of the genre's inherent accessibility.”

A Gemini herself, Bryant confesses that she is “necessarily a believer in horoscopes myself, but I have huge respect for the art behind it! I love the idea of trusting there's a fate laid out for you if you need it, and I love that there's basically a whole science in how to read the world through the stars. My only trouble with horoscopes is when they become excuses to judge others way too soon, or worse, excuses to justify your own bad behaviour.”

"Libra is about an extremely difficult friend break-up I went through that really damaged my sense of self. It took a long time and a lot of sad songs that never saw the light of day to process that I'd wrongfully been made to feel to blame, when in actuality I was a victim of this person's outlandish emotional abuse. Years down the line I was retelling the story to my co-writers on the track, and finally I could just look back and laugh, because it was all so ridiculous. We honed in on the fact that this friend would obsessively explain their actions by saying it was just "Libra tendencies", and likewise, that I was predetermined to be the problem because I'm a Gemini. Then we just exaggerated that to the Nth degree and ended up with Libra as this huge banger about the whole situation.”

Reflecting on the track, Bryant says “I'm thrilled to have shared this experience with so many fantastic collaborators and so excited to get it out into the world, because it feels like my biggest main pop girl moment yet!”
