Twominds Festival: South Island’s best-kept music secret returns

02 March 2024 - 0 Comments

Christchurch is once again in the running for New Zealand’s best electronic music scene.

Now with the success of its first festival under its belt, Twomind’s highly-anticipated second year will see it expand to two days to showcase more local talent alongside big names in the electronic music industry this March.

Corban Tupou, co-founder of Twominds, says that the unique festival concept has caught a significant amount of attention for their sophomore event.

“Twominds Festival was founded after recognising the opportunity for a festival in Ōtautahi that has a different approach to other popular festivals we see in Aotearoa.”

Instead of copying the traditional festival structure of main stages with significant headliners, Tupou says the team created five smaller hand-built stages to spread out and diversify the experience of the festival.

“This broadens the experience for attendees as they adventure through the stages, while also increasing the presence of the very community we have to thank for music events in Ōtautahi.”

With the countdown on till March 15 -17, the festival has already sold out to its final release.

“We’ve had a 225% increase in ticket registrations and expect that our last remaining tickets will sell out, which is something that we never thought would happen as soon as our second year!”

Since the earthquakes, Twominds has been a catalyst in Christchurch’s cultural revitalization by pioneering a Gen Z resurgence of the electronic dance music scene.

Fostering keen DJs and underground talent, the team champions diversity and inclusivity in everything they do.

Festival director Dan Stewart says while Christchurch is known for being a conservative city, Twominds is centered in a tight-knit and supportive underground music community.

“We began Twominds in 2020 with little knowledge of organising events, and we now run our own record label and music festival. It’s all thanks to the support of this community.”

“After growing up in a small rural town, I found that the music scene in Ōtautahi/Christchurch was a totally new world - progressive, open-minded, and accepting. Those are some of the values that attracted me to dance music, and we try our hardest to make sure those same values are felt at our events.”

With an exhilarating lineup boasting a high caliber of emerging and established talent from NZ to overseas, the two-day festival will host 55 acts across five stages nestled within an 800-hectare pine forest.

Featuring DJs such as AJ Honeysuckle, Christopher Tubbs, BBYFACEKILLA, and Kedu Carlo, festival-goers can expect everything from house, disco, techno, dancehall, and jungle, to soulful drum and bass.

Tupou says he is stoked to welcome London-based headliners Chaos in the CBD and SHERELLE to Spencer Park next month.

“We have fallen in love with these artists because of their stories. Seeing relatable people find global success because of their raw passion for the craft has been an amazing thing to watch.

“We feel they are the perfect representation of the music culture we want to promote with Twominds Festival.”

Twominds Festival wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Christchurch City Council, DB Breweries, Curiosity Gin, Bee, Lumo Digital, and RDU98.5FM.
