95bFM continues its NZ Music Month activity with the 4th annual Fancy New Band Showcase! 95bFM has collected the best and brightest artists from the Fancy New Band Breakfast live-to-air feature to play one amazing night of up-and-coming talent, May 21st at the Kings Arms. The 2010 lineup includes:
Mothers of Darkness, the post-psychedelic punk-surf band that sounds "like the krautrock Butthole Surfers doing Bauhaus songs or something". The band has recently made their mark on the 95bFM Top Ten and playlist with the track "Flamingoes".
The Thomas Oliver Band, the blues-rock powerhouse from Wellington that are currently recording a follow-up to 2007's Every Penny EP. Their instrument roster includes slide guitar and double-bass to complement the band's healthy dose of rock'n roll. Listen up for "Nothing Left" and "Goin' Home" on the 95bFM airwaves.
The Pink Pound Experience, recently nominated for a Myspace Choice Award and runners-up in the 42Unheard Competition with their brand of synth-influenced rock. Drawing influence from their electric 80's childhoods and a dash of just about everything they've ever heard since. "Eyes Don't Lie" is on 95bFM now.
Rackets, the archetypal 95bFM Fancy New Band with "four to the floor" indie-punk repertoire. Rackets are constantly playing live shows and burning up the 95bFM Top Ten, most recently with "42 and a Half".
Miho Wada returned from SXSW this year and was promptly offered an international tour to take her incredibly unique sound - what she describes as "Japanese Punk Jazz"- to the world. She's studied in Cuba AND was in that Orcon commercial with Iggy Pop. Her track "Piss Off" is currently gracing the 95bFM airwaves.
Glowdogs, aka Hugh Smith - who charged onto the bFM top ten last summer with "Phase Cool" - references 80s pop punk, layering upbeat tempos with distorted undertones. Keep your ears open for "Woman in a Portal" on 95bFM.
Mad Pattern, who do grungy blues-rock tuneage that grooves, in the words of Randy Jackson, 'in the pocket'. The band is offering their EP Zebra Tang for free, no-strings-attached download at bandcamp. "Stranger to the Street" from said EP is playing on 95bFM now.
The Showcase will be broadcast live on 95bFM from start to finish. And it's all FREE, because NZ Music Month shouldn't be about wanky industry parties, it should be about parties for music fans!
Punters can also show their bCard or buy one on the door for $9.50 and be entered to win a Rockband Kit for XBox, assorted CD and DVD packs, a pair of Converse shoes, beverages from Jagermeister and Sol, and more.
