On the back of the releasing of her debut solo album Modern Fables, this August Julia Deans will play four shows across New Zealand. Julia, drummer Redford Grenell and bassist Richie Piccard will play Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington & Auckland.
Lisa Crawley will also play support across all dates.
Known across the lands as Fur Patrol's charismatic and charming front-woman, Julia Deans has been singing fables and truths to New Zealand audiences since the late 90's.
Now stepping out of her Fur Patrol shoes, July 12 saw the release of a long awaited solo album. Modern Fables is a step away from the driving rock and anthemic, sonic journeys Fur Patrol created. While there are still moments of rock grandeur, Deans has allowed more of an introspective, acoustic pop side of her songwriting to emerge. At times tinged with folk, at others pure balladry, Modern Fables showcases a talent gracefully exploring other avenues of musical expression.
Having written all the songs on acoustic guitar, Deans wanted to keep her voice and the guitar the core focus of the arrangements, so she could then later embellish with extra instrumentation such as keys, drums, double bass and horns.
Modern Fables is an album that many have been anticipating for a long time. Worth the wait, this record doesn't disappoint; Julia Deans delivers some of the best songs she has ever written.
“Julia Deans has a simply stunning voice and it’s never been more evident than on her debut solo album”. Paula Yeoman, NZ herald.
“It's good to have Deans out pushing the barrow solo”, “Deans is a good writer and a great singer”.
Simon Sweetman, Dominion Post.
“The overwhelming star of the show is Deans‘voice which is world class. Deans is an under-appreciated Kiwi talent who deserves center stage”. Vicki Anderson, The Press.
