‘Frantic’ and ‘messy’ are the usual stickers stamped on the disaster zones that are ripping across the country’s underground music scene. The hard-headed contortions of Ary Jansen and Catherine Cumming, on the other hand, are better suited to the word ‘Onesie’.
Independently releasing “Squirm”, the duo soon roll across New Zealand in preparation of bigger things – that is, breaking into the USA’s West Coast come June.
Onesie is innocent and unassuming, just as Jansen and Cumming are as individuals. But the schizophrenia only kicks in with the sum of their parts when an onstage switch goes off inside Jansen’s head – which dizzies clarity until all blood has been bled and the stage once again becomes uncomfortably still. The lyrics “come on everybody, asphyxiate” couldn’t be any more appropriate.
Squirm is a statement by Onesie to mark their current standing – a position bookended by an ambitious past and a very welcoming future. It gives off a sullen moodiness which, encased in filth, is more enlightening than you’d expect. But expectation hardly comes into it with how often this otherwise playful twosome will shock. “Moon Rock” was their idea of what their debut EP sounded like – and now more than ever, the double-term articulates Onesie’s distant, rare kind of nature. The tides, too, change with the moon.
Earlier this year, Onesie set off with only a debut EP to cover more ground than most other bands their age. After having already opened for The Clean in March, many eyes are now fixed on whatever Onesie will do next.
