In 2011, Moana & the Tribe clocked up the airpoints with their first real world tour taking their music across Canada, throughout Europe, up into the Arctic Circle then around Taiwan. The band will kick off 2012 by launching their new CD ‘The Best of Moana & the Tribe’ at the Muriwai Waitangi Day Festival on Feb 6th.
‘This retrospective album marks a new beginning for me,’ says musician Moana Maniapoto. ‘A group of us had a bit of an ongoing debate about what songs from my albums were sort of career markers, that would sit well on a single C.D and represent my work to date. It’s been really interesting revisiting some songs I haven’t played for years and hearing other versions captured live during radio or television broadcasts. Next month I’m about to start collaborating more closely with international artists who I’ve connected with when we’ve performed offshore. It’s a bit scary but pretty exciting at the same time.’
Having recently moved to Muriwai beach, Moana talked with singer Nat Rose about building a new event at Muriwai for Waitangi Day that brings visual and performing artists together under the theme ‘Every Day is Waitangi Day.’
‘I’ve played at hundreds of festivals so got some idea of what might work,’ says Moana. ‘I talked to some of my muso mates, Nat talked to someone who talked to someone else…next minute, there’s a bunch of us plotting and it’s game on.’
Locals including 15 year old Majic, M.C &Hip hop artist ImaGe, songstress NatRose (just back fromRhythm & Vines) and otherswill perform alongsidepopular South Auckland funksters Ardijah, Pacific Curls, Maisey Rika andone of NZs best-loved artists Anika Moa.
Set within native bush at Houghtons Bush Camp, the first Waitangi Day Muriwai Festival is a festival with a difference. Over 15 Muriwai Beach painters, photographers, sculptors, jewellers will be creating, exhibiting and selling new works for a special Waitangi Day Exhibition. A guided hikoi of small groups to a sacred site on the venue will be made available throughout the day while in between bands, a series of lively speakers and celebrities will sit in ‘the Treaty Hot Seat’ onstage.
All music, art, cuisine, korero and crafts will acknowledge 'Every Day is Waitangi Day’ and in keeping with the theme, the event will be smoke-free, drug-free, alcohol-free and operate with a zero waste policy.Due to the size of the site, tickets will be strictly limited. All ticket proceeds will be donated towards the new Muriwai Volunteer Lifeguard fundraiser for a new Club & Community Centre and Reweti Marae.
‘Muriwai needs a dedicated venue for community events. After all, it’s practically an artist’s colony – everyone I meet is either in film, music or an artist of some kind. The timing for this Festival just happened to work in with the launch of our CD so its perfect on a whole bunch of levels.’
The Muriwai Waitangi Day Festival has received support from Auckland Council, Creative New Zealand and Te Puni Kokiri.
