Gig & Concert News - Batucada Sound Machine Release New Album

Batucada Sound Machine Release New Album

23 January 2012 - 0 Comments

Riding the wake of their successful European summer tour, Batucada Sound Machine return to New Zealand with a new album of road-tested tunes entitled “Don’t Keep Silent”, out today.

In addition, BSM have planned their first ever comprehensive tour of New Zealand to celebrate the album release including a spot at WOMAD 2012.

This 10 piece onslaught of pacific-soul, latin, afro-beat and hip-hop have an unparalleled reputation for their polished, high-energy performance, which has seen them conquer audiences at a host of renowned festivals; including the main stage at Sziget Festival (Hungary), Horizonte Festival and Kulturarena (Germany), Larmer Tree Festival (UK) and the City of London Festival to name a few.

The release of Dont Keep Silent comes 3 years after their debut ‘Rhythm & Rhyme’ which received rave reviews both locally and abroad. Band leader and musical director James Hughes explains that this new album, “retains a percussive-heavy approach to our music, but has been developed through a much more collaborative effort by the song-writers”. This has resulted in strong messages, and a spectrum of heavy tunes, introspective tunes, and straight-ahead dance tracks.

The first single from the album, “Drownin’ In It” is a firey little summer anthem with an impassioned vocal from longtime BSM member Richie Setford.  It heralds a heavier, more urgent BSM sound.

“Falling (Down Down)” reinforces the Brazilian percussion and smooth horns the band are renowned for while introducing a soulful vibe through renowned vocalist Cherie Mathieson.

The third track “Ae Ae” (a single in Spanish speaking countries for sure!) then introduces a new member to the fold; MC Paaka Davis  - who deftly compliments the band’s material with his slick lyrical performance.

“My Heart He Say” cements the bands afrobeat credentials with some mammoth horn lines, and tracks such as “Un Poquito”, “Naquela Estrada” and “Traigo mi Sonido”  - deliver some real-deal latin flavour, and showcase the vocal prowess of Brazilian front man Henrique Morales.

The album was recorded at The Lab, Auckland (Ollie Harmer) and mixed by Bob ‘Bassy’ Brockman (NYC) and will be released through Border Music and DRM NZ.

To celebrate the release, Batucada Sound Machine are performing at Real Groovy in Auckland today, the 23rd January at 12.30pm.  There will also be $10 tickets to the Auckland show at Sale St if you purchase the album at this time.
