If ever proof was required that underground music still exists in New Zealand, Wellington's Vorn is a great place to start. In a songwriting career spanning 13 years, Vorn has released 6 albums to critical acclaim, toured relentlessly with his phenomenally fine-tuned five-piece band, and won a cult following verging on the fanatical, all without the slightest whiff of mainstream airplay or shudderingly expensive NZ-On-Air-funded videos.
With the release of 2011's Down For It, Vorn's status as New Zealand Music's best-kept secret seems destined finally to crumble. The Dominion Post's Simon Sweetman, hardly renowned for his soft touch, was moved to gush: "Colgan is one of this country’s greatest songwriters, never cloying or faux-romantic; these are direct songs; honest, cynical, sincere, hilarious and in many cases ridiculously catchy."
While in Auckland, the Sunday Star Times's Grant Smithies opined: "Here’s a man capable of wringing great pop from the bleaker aspects of modern urban life", before retrospectively declaring it the album of the year 2011. Increasingly, the question arising from Vorn's prolific songwriting ouevre is not if it will take its place as a supernova in New Zealand pop's galaxy, but when.
The Down For It South Island tour is hitting a town near you, very soon. The tour represents an opportunity which is increasingly rare in this era of instant fame and just-add-water stardom: the opportunity to see a truly great act, Before They Were Big. Get down and see it, so you can say you were there.
