Weaving siren-like three-part harmonies with their crystalline and curious arrangements, the Dirty Projectors’ magical live performances are an unguarded ode to melody – compelling in their skill, and overflowing with soul. From the bursting voices that bolt from ‘Gun Has No Trigger’ to the handmade intimacy and commanding guitar work of ‘Just From Chevron’, their 6th full length studio album Swing Lo Magellan, released in July 2012, strikes balance between impeccable technique and wide-eyed warmth across its twelve joyous songs.
To write the album, frontman David Longstreth decamped to remote Delaware County, four hours northwest of New York to dream up seventy potential tracks across a sprawling twelve months. Joined periodically by his band – guitarist and lead female vocalist Amber Coffman, bassist Nat Baldwin, drummer Brian McOmber and vocalist Haley Dekle – they rehearsed and recorded the full-length in the A-frame attic of his temporary upstate home. Across operatic song cycles (2005’s The Getty Address), diverse collaborations (with Björk and David Byrne no less), and wild re-workings (Rise Above, an interpretation of Black Flag’s classic album Damaged), Dirty Projectors have never shied from concept or challenge – proving themselves as likely to play on Letterman as with the LA Philharmonic at Disney Hall. We can’t wait to see them here in NZ!
Dirty Projectors are a band, from Brooklyn NY, consisting of David Longstreth (vocals, guitar, musical direction), Amber Coffman (vocals, guitar), Haley Dekle (vocals), Nat Baldwin (bass), Olga Bell (vocals, keyboards), and Michael Johnson (drums). They have released six full-length studio albums plus a handful of EP’s and projects. Nice
