Anti-folk? Alt-country? Indie pop? Psychedelia? A punk prayer? In some countries, this music could get you arrested. But not in New Zealand.
Join Amnesty International at the Kings Arms on Wednesday 12 December for a Riot Free night of music to raise funds for human rights and campaign for the release of two members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot.
Graham Panther (Panther & the Zoo), Great North, Sherpa and BearCat know how lucky they are to enjoy real freedom of expression so they’ll be pulling on their balaclavas and coming out to support Amnesty International’s campaign.
When Russian band Pussy Riot performed a punk prayer back in February calling for the Virgin Mary to save them from Putin, they probably never expected the reaction they got. Three members arrested. Two of them sentenced to two years each, charged with hooliganism. Sent to Russian penal colonies, far from their families, and at risk of ill-treatment and abuse. All because of a song.
Amnesty International wants to send 3000 signatures to the Russian authorities before the end of the year calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Nadia and Masha, who did nothing more than sing a peaceful protest song against the government, and urging the Russian authorities to respect the right to freedom of expression.
So if you’re a believer in the right to express yourself freely without fear of persecution and you want to do something about it, head along to the Kings Arms on Wednesday 12 December and support the cause.Wear something pink, come in a balaclava, and get your riot face on.
