The organisers of Parachute Festival 2013 are once again offering struggling families an opportunity to attend the event for a price of their choosing.

The ‘Pay What You Can Afford’ ticket initiative was introduced by Parachute in the lead-up to Parachute 2012. In the
wake of a tough economic year and a saturated events market that saw the demise of iconic festival Big Day Out, Parachute Festival organizers opened their gates to financially struggling families, allowing them to pay as little as $1
entry fee.

1,380 families took advantage of the initiative.

Parachute has announced the return of PWYCA tickets in 2013, with a few changes to the initiative. The organisation
has taken to local fundraising site Givealittle to garner donations from the public – for every $200 raised, one family will be subsidised to attend the festival, contributing what they can afford with Parachute making up the balance of the ticket price.

Generous punters have contributed $27,000 to the cause so far, and donation offers are contining to come in.

Applications for PWYCA tickets are open for a short time on the festival’s website.

Parachute Music CEO Mark de Jong says “2012’s ‘Pay What You Can Afford’ initiative was our response to financial pressures on NZ families - we were blown away by people’s response to it. Although it wouldn’t be financially viable for us to continue the initiative as an open invitation, we feel like we’ve come up with a great approach in 2013 that will allow us to continue to be generous to our punters.”

Parachute also announced earlier this year that it had lowered Parachute 2013 ticket prices across the board, introduced new student prices and layby options, and broadened the criteria for family tickets.
