Gig & Concert News - The Freshman Tour 2016

The Freshman Tour 2016

22 December 2015 - 1 Comment

All Freshman students unite! It’s “O Week” like no other – the Freshman Tour 2016 takes in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland, and features the hippest line-up of urban artists on the scene right now.

Jhené Aiko, David Dallas, G-Eazy, with support from Mai fm’s DJ Sir-Vere, headline what is sure to be a sell-out tour for Orientation Week.

Tickets are on sale Tuesday December 22 at 9.00am - Public (non student) tickets are strictly limited.

Grammy-nominated pop sensation Jhené Aiko makes her long-awaited New Zealand debut in 2016 with her electrifying live show. A major voice in the alternative R&B scene, Aiko’s ascendancy has been swift and captivating since releasing her debut mixtape in 2011.

Aiko’s most recent album, Souled Out, cemented her position as an indelible force in the pop landscape. A further refinement of her sublime sound, the record fuses elements of hip-hop, classic R&B and hints of psychedelic rock – perfectly exemplifying the singer’s ability to move between styles and moods with absolute fluency. Entering the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at #1, Souled Out was immediately declared a triumph by critics and fans throughout the world. Watch the video for single Eternal Sunshinehere.

Joining the soulful Jhené Aiko is one of the world’s hottest hip hop acts, G-Eazy. Quickly becoming known for being one of his generation’s most exciting live performers, G-Eazy’s incredible skills as an entertainer have not gone unnoticed. Having been named by USA Today as one of the best and biggest hip-hop touring acts on the college circuit, G-Eazy has toured relentlessly for years and is excited to join the Freshman orientation tour for New Zealand.

G-Eazy released his new album, When It's Dark Out, on December 4 and it comes fresh off the heels of the first single Me, Myself & I with Bebe Rexha. Watch the video here.

The album is G-Eazy’s most accomplished work to-date, showcasing his cinematic and personal storytelling. The album’s immersive, hard-hitting and sweeping productions include work from G-Eazy himself as well as long-time collaborator Christoph Andersson, Boi-1da, Southside, DJ Spinz, Kane Beatz, and Remo, amongst others.

Arguably the biggest innovator in hip-hop New Zealand has seen in two decades, David Dallas brings some Kiwi clout to the Freshman line-up. Dallas has sold out shows across New Zealand, Australia and the United States, released three chart-topping albums, opened for huge acts including Eminem and received a long list of awards and accolades.

Dallas has a highly-anticipated new album due to drop very soon, featuring his latest single, the socially-conscious Don’t Rate That. Watch here.

No party would be complete without New Zealand's number one turntable rocker, DJ Sir-Vere. A universally-respected nightclub, radio and Mix CD DJ/host in New Zealand, Sir-Vere can also be found on the airways in Auckland, hosting Mai FM’s Lunch Breaks, and is also Content Director/Station Manager for the station.

Jhené Aiko, David Dallas, G-Eazy and DJ Sir-Vere will perform under the brand new Freshman banner - a concert series developed especially for Orientation Week and students, kicking off in 2016.

UCSA Christchurch is the first to see the party started on Tuesday February 23 at Ilam Field. On Thursday February 25, the Freshman tour moves to Dunedin for OUSA Dunedin at the Forsyth Barr Stadium. Then, the final Freshman show, with all four acts on the bill, hits Logan Campbell in Auckland for AUSA Auckland on Friday February 26.

Wellington is not forgotten; under the Freshman banner and playing their own shows are David Dallas and G-Eazy.

David Dallas performs for VUWSA Wellington at The Hunter Lounge on Wednesday February 24. G-Eazy performs his own show for VUWSA Wellington at The Hunter Lounge on Saturday February 27.
