When did the band form?: Southern Antarctica formed late 2014 playing live gigs covering hard rock classics and various members original tunes. a
Where did the name come from?: There are many bands in the Northern Hemisphere (believe it or not) oddly called Antarctica. We liked the idea of the name and as we actually are the Southern-most band with that name we added the Southern to it. That is as far South as one can go...ask Shakelton.
What are your musical influences?: A pastiche of something between hard rock and folk music. We don't consciously try to sound like anyone else other than ourselves.
The original tunes, who writes those?: There is a mixture of music and lyric content coming from each member of the band that contributes. Often a lyric is written and music added, and viky-verka.
Where do you play?: We have been busy recording tunes for the Southland Entertainer of Year Awards, a demo CD, and our first album, so between our busy day jobs and lives we have accomplished quite a lot in a year. We have done some private gigs, and pub gigs and they have all been well received.
What gear do you use?; We all use professional top line musical instruments from the big names out there...Fender, Ibanez, Shure, Paiste, Tama, etc.
What is the band's highlight so far? We wrote a song especially for the Bluff Rocks Nepal Earthquake charity gig. It was available worldwide -wide, and of course played at the event.
What is the future for the band?; 2016 the band will continue in the studio as we have a stack of quality originals bursting to be recorded, and also intend to get out performing in public more, as our other commitments allow.
What aspects of the band are best?. It's a lot of fun. We have a good team that clicks, there is a lot of underlying talent and productive material upcoming, it keeps the band fresh and we are able to express ourselves.
How can anyone hire Southern Antarctica?: UPDATE 2021 due to loss of band treasured member to cancer the band has reformed and just as the BEATLES did, SOUTHERN ANTARCTICA has decided to perform record and hang out at Studio ‘4DC’ (that’s dirty deeds done dirt cheap folks) and avoid the hassle of our COVID restricting live gig opportunities.
