Prolific New Zealand singer-songwriter BRIAN BAKER, officially celebrates the New Zealand release of his latest single, ‘EVERYWHERE YOU GO’.
With its catchy hook, ‘Everywhere You Go’ is a wonderfully laid-back and thoughtfully sincere track, driven by a swinging bass-line, melodic rock-blues guitaring and Bakers soothing vocal. Since its mid-November release in Australia, the song has garnered over 34,000 streams on Spotify, and continues to rise daily.
Borne out of COVID times, ‘Everywhere You Go’ deals with feelings of separation – that while we are unable to hold our loved ones, or be in their physical presence, we can still hold them in our hearts and minds.
Having relocated to New Zealand from Australia, Baker emerged from quarantine on the auspicious date of 1st January 2021, to settle into an off-the-grid permaculture farm north of Auckland, where he immediately started setting up a new studio recording space. It was while doing these earthy, hands-on and structural tasks that Baker dreamt up the harmonious, gentle and heart-felt tune.
“I left family in Melbourne to set up back home, here in New Zealand,” explains Brian. “After 40+ years of living in Australia, it was a big decision to uproot and resettle, but it felt like the time was right. This song is simply an expression of the accompanying emotions, and I’m thinking that pretty much everyone can relate to those in some way or another.”
Baker’s musical history outside of Australian bands, notably includes many collaborations with Eddie Rayner (Split Enz) over the years, and they have continued to work together on various projects since.
Says Eddie, “Brian and I have been collaborating since the early 1980s, when I produced a song for his band ’The Ones’. He writes infuriatingly-hooky melodies, music beds that swing like hammocks, and lyrics that would soften the hardest heart. This is why I hate him.”
Baker is not only a prolific creative with his own music, he is also in demand for his musical experience and production skills, and is currently producing several local artists at his studio The Bakery.
Plans are underway for a new video to be made by Baker’s network of film professional neighbours on his farm in the beautiful surrounds of Kaipara, and will be released in the new year. Meanwhile, Brian has turned his crafty art skills to creating a simple lyric video with an organic vibe, totally suitable for the song and from where it is – straight from the heart.
Brian Baker is a singer-songwriter/producer with a passion for the environment and Buddhism, themes evident in his songs, music, and videos. He plays guitar, bass, piano, and keyboards, drums, and percussion, sings, and relishes his production duties, on his own songs and other artists’ works.
After moving to Australia from New Zealand in 1980, he performed with many Australian bands, securing a Sony recording deal with "The Ones" in 1986 after signing a publishing deal with Rondor Music. Around this time he scored his first song placement on the second Un Canny X-Men album, “What you give is what you get”. After writing and recording top 20 single “Heart” with The Ones he went on to co-write the score for the movie "Rikki and Pete" with Eddie Rayner from Split Enz.
Eddie and Brian continued to work together as "The Makers", releasing 2 CDs through Warner, East West label, including the hit single and video “Big Picture”. Together with drummer Michael Barker, they toured Australia and New Zealand with the B52's.
Brian has spent his life in the music industry, performing at countless shows and writing and recording songs and music at the highest level of his profession. He now offers that expertise through his studio, "The Bakery", producing videos and music for companies, and helping other artists with song-writing and production, (ie recording beautifully produced and recorded CD's, and/or industry ready demos for them).
He hasn't stopped writing and performing his music, and his CD, “Hard Light” features Eddie on keyboards, some of which was recorded in at Neil Finns Roundhead Studios in Auckland. Eddie is a constant sounding board and mentor for Brian's music, contributing piano on his single "In Our Backyard" among other bits and pieces.
Brian teamed back up with Eddie Rayner to create some live music together, performing at the Waiheke Island International Jazz Festival in New Zealand in April 2012.
Live, Brian performs some of the great songs he's written, including "Nothing Comes Easy" which is being covered by Australian country artist Graeme Connors on his record “Kindred Spirits”, Graeme’s recording of his favourite Australian songwriters.
His recording studio, affectionately known as "The Bakery", is pumping out music, most recently the soundtrack for the TV Show "Inside Art" and Brian has also produced Michelle Chandler's latest CD, "Unravelling" , Cathy Dobson's CD and Ethan Farmer's new recordings, all receiving major airplay around the world.
Brian offers his expertise from his recording studio “The Bakery Recording Studio New Zealand”, producing other artists, co-writing and assisting with song-writing and recording. Brian is proudly signed to Origin Music. He still works with Eddie and is continuing to find creative peaks, releasing great new songs regularly.
