Baby Zionov is the musical project of Aaliyah Zionov, a musician and songwriter currently based in Tamaki Makaurau. Baby Zionov's music takes influence from 90s happy hardcore, 70's space disco, and vintage 16-bit video game soundtracks. She lays her playfully sensual vocals delicately throughout the mix.
Today she shares the official video for Bada Ooom (A Ba Nup Nup Nup Nup Nup Na Na Bada Oooom).
In a recent interview with 95bFM's Jess Fu, Aaliyah divulged the song " started off as a remix that I used to play in my live shows of Yoshi (a fictional dinosaur from the Super Mario franchise). During the lockdown (March 26 - June 9) I was revisiting old projects and decided to see if I could turn it into a tender pop song."
"I don't really write lyrics, so to come up with the melody I started scatting. Once I was happy I sent it to my friend Amelia (Sunreturn's Amamelia) asking if she could make it into a workable pop lyrics. She came up with a really nice, tender, love song."
The official video is created by Madison Van Staden (Moody.V and The Menstrual Cycle, Babyteeth) who channels the early stop-motion works of Michel Gondry and Chris Knox.
....And You Are The Bitch was conceived, created and mixed by Baby Zionov as Aotearoa, New Zealand went into lockdown for the first time to combat the spread of Covid-19. Throughout the EP she is joined by Lil Gracie, Ragged Veins and Chansey. The EP was mastered by Rohan Evans (The Wine Cellar) and keen listeners will draw parallels to the output of Charli XCX , 100 gecs, and QT.
Following the release ....And You Are The Bitch, the EP's singles Clubbing In The Time Of Cholera and Sudoku Class feat Chansey were play-listed throughout New Zealand's Alternative Radio Stations, and featured on 95bFM's Top 10. Aaliyah has appeared on RNZ, and had songs on playlists curated by Under The Radar, Flying Out and New Zealand Musician.
In recent weeks Baby Zionov has featured on the fourth instalment of WEIRD NXC®, a compilation of hyperpop and ravepop centric music. In September she will perform alongside Upper Hutt Posse, Nadia Reid and the Sunretrun family at The Others Way festival.
