Tamaki Makaurau post-punk trio Repairs are fizzing with excitement about the release of their new video for single Pop Song which was shot back in late July (during alert level 1).
Released on July 22, their third single of 2020 is one of many drops from their upcoming debut album Repeat, Repeat, which is coming out on vinyl on September 18.
Pop Song is two-and-a-half minutes of stomping drum beats by James Milne, swinging guitar by Martin Phillips and a catchy vocal/bass combo by Nicola Edwards. The track went to number one on Radio Control 99.4FM and reached number six on the bFM Top 10 during August.
Inspired by the feelings of imposter syndrome and inadequacy, the video concept for the track is ironically set in a karaoke booth. The big-sound song is visually contrasted by a tiny dark room and blue ‘TV’ lighting.
Directed and produced by Kat Waswo of WAZKAT Productions, she said she had a lot of fun working with the team at the Parnell location, except for all the popping.
“I had to block my ears for some of the shots,” Kat laughs. “When we were getting ready to go on set I remembered that I actually have a fear of popping noises!”
Bassist and vocalist Nicola says she really enjoyed making the video with the band and their friends. “We just look like we’re having so much fun!” she said.
“I love the story,” Nicola says about the karaoke theme. “If people don’t have a smile on their face after watching this, then they are wrong!” she laughs.
Most recently setting loose petite ‘gang-chant’ track An Argument on September 2, the debut LP from Repairs is now available on pre-sale at Flying Out
