The finalists in 15 categories for the New Zealand Music Awards 2006 have been announced at a function in Auckland today (September 6).
Finalists in multiple categories include Bic Runga and Elemeno P with four finalists’ nods each while The Bleeders and Frontline are finalists in three awards.
Bic Runga’s 2006 just gets bigger, today she received the Best Producer technical award for her third album Birds while the work also earned engineer Andrew Upston a Tui for Best Engineer.
Bic Runga’s Birds is a finalist in the PlayStation® SingStar Album of the Year while the single Winning Arrow earns a finals nod in the New Zealand Herald Single of the Year category.
Bic’s winsome, transfixing tunes also put her in the running for Best Female Solo Artist and the People’s Choice Award.
For the group’s second album Trouble in Paradise, Elemeno P claims finals berths in the PlayStation® SingStar Album of the Year, KIWI FM Best Group and Best Rock Album categories and also gets backing for the People’s Choice Award.
Altogether 37 artists are featured in the line-up of finalists. The Tui awards are to be presented at a glittering red carpet function in Auckland on October 18.
West Auckland punk rock quintet the Bleeders earn finals berths in KIWI FM Best Group, Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Rock Album for Sweet As Sin.
Rap duo Frontline’s Borrowed Time is a finalist in the Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Urban / Hip Hop Album while the group also gets a nod in the People’s Choice Award.
Other artists with finalists nods in multiple categories are; Aaradhna, Anika Moa, Concord Dawn, Dave Dobbyn, Don McGlashan, Fly My Pretties and Pluto.
RIANZ music awards spokesperson Campbell Smith says it has been another great year for Kiwi music.
“It’s great to see such a wide spread of nominations across various artists with new and more performers coming to the fore.”
“I imagine we can look forward to an awards show where no one artist dominates but the Tuis are spread about a bit. This has got to be positive for New Zealand music.”
