Poneke/Wellington avant-folk trio Ida Lune are releasing their debut self-titled album on Wednesday 18th November 2020 via local label Home Alone Music. The three songwriters come together from contrasting musical backgrounds, but each of their unique voices intertwine in soaring harmony, as closely aligned as those of sister folk band, The Staves.
Recorded in the old family home of singer Anna Wooles over cups of hot lemon tea; the album is warm, comfortable, evocative and serene with surprising moments of comedy shining through. Anna Wooles deep voice is strong and kind, often finding wry humour in awkward situations and delving into issues of female disempowerment. Rose Blake’s (Blaek, Dawn Diver) crystal clear tone, on the other hand tackles isolation and connection in a haunting fashion, like in their new single Apart, which is gorgeously portrayed in slow motion on their new video (out 11 November) filmed at Wellington’s Red Rocks. Deanne Krieg (WHIM, Dawn Diver) brings lyrical honestly with her voice like liquid honey to the ear.
Although each bring their own songs to the project, their three-part harmonies and ability to blend together, are (almost) always at the fore, enhanced by layers of synth and strings (banjo, mandolin, guitar and more). The album includes string arrangements by Charley Davenport, bass by Scott Maynard, percussion by Ato Baidoo, and is beautifully, recorded by Mike Isaacs and Darren Maynard, mixed by James Goldsmith and mastered by Alex Green.
At the heart of this genre-bending musical project is their friendship, which results in sleepovers, sharing recipes, hot chocolates and the joy of singing together in harmony. Keep an eye out for 2021 tour dates to celebrate the album release.
Ida Lune will be available from streaming platforms and Bandcamp from 18th November 2020.
