‘I See Red’ is a familiar refrain to Kiwi music fans. But the words gain new meaning for both media and musicians alike at this year’s New Zealand Music Awards.
That’s because the grooviest gathering place at this year’s annual Kiwi music-fest is going to be the Red Room. More often referred to in entertainment circles as the Green Room, the room has a different hue in 2006 thanks to sponsor The Warehouse.
And while the colour may be hot, the designers have set out to ensure the Red Room is definitely the coolest place to be.
Graham Dickie and Peter Reid from Republic Home have raided The Warehouse’s extensive range of homeware stock to fit out the room.
“We really wanted something that was super cool. The Warehouse has a truly amazing range of products – they’re stylish and they’re affordable. So we have taken these everyday products from The Warehouse stock and turned the Red Room into a cool bar and lounge area for the young and the hip,” Reid says.
Reid – well known for his design work on TV’s Hot Property and DIY Rescue – says the Red Room, like the Red Shed, will house an amazing array of great homeware.
“Think massaging chairs, big Plasma TVs, stereos, sheepskin-covered sofas and walls made from storage boxes. The Red Room will really showcase the extraordinary range The Warehouse stocks,” he says.
Reid and business partner Dickie’s Republic Home in Auckland is a design store that specialises in both modern and vintage furniture and homeware.
Like Reid, Dickie is well known for his TV roles having worked on Changing Rooms, Hosuecalls and consulted on one or two episodes of My House My Castle.
He says the Red Room is modelled on a bar in hip Hollywood Hotel The Standard.
“There’s only one place that’s going to be cooler than the Red Room on October 18 at the Aotea Centre and that’s on stage,” Dickie says.
“Peter and Graham have done a fantastic job with our Warehouse homewares,” says The Warehouse corporate affairs manager Cynthia Church. “It's great to see our range styled and presented in a way which really shows off what you can do on a budget.”
The room will be split into two areas, one a quieter working room for media and the other an oasis of R&R for media, musicians and celebrities.
