Tu Tilley, an 8 piece band from Paekakariki released their first single White Cloud Island to Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube this week. Written by guitarist and vocalist Himiona Grace and musically arranged by Tu Tilley the song is about 'our history and living in our own little paradise here in Aotearoa.
It's also a call to unite against the biggest threat we face, which of course is climate change. We need to take action now'.
'I wrote the lyrics a long time ago and it was basically an acoustic solo piece. The band has such a wide range of musical backgrounds, from classical, jazz to Pa trained musicians', says Himiona. 'They gave it a new arrangement and a whole new life. It's pretty awesome to see it released this week'.
The band has gone through a couple of name changes and members since originally establishing themselves to support local power house vocalist Tanira Kingi. And for the first few years they rehearsed at number 2 Tilley Rd in Paekakariki. Tu Tilley as a name 'kinda stuck.'
Their relaxed approach to music has been one that has seen them quickly become a favourite on the Kapiti Coast, especially in Paekakariki. 'We all live here, even Chris Pierce (saxophone player from 1814) grew up here and moved back to settle with his family'.
Known for their heavy hitting sound influenced from genres such as soul, funk, reggae and classical, it’s definitely worth a night out to watch them live.
'We have a disciplined but relaxed approach, we’re a pretty chilled family of musicians but when it comes to the crunch we want to make sure we deliver the goods to people so they have an awesome night out'.
With their sights set on producing an EP early next year, Tu Tilley are looking forward to where this next part of their journey is going to take them.
"Much like this waiata, we’re navigating our journey forward to reach our goal."
To celebrate the release of their first single White Cloud Island, Tu Tilley played to a sell out crowd at St Peters Hall in Paekakariki on Saturday 5th Dec.
"The place was rocking! It is such a great venue."
White Cloud Island is available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and all the usual music platforms.
