Tamaki Makaurau based acoustic-pop duo Ben & Brody is the joining together of the siblings Ben (15) and Brody (18) Glanfield. Their track Open Up was written and performed by the duo as apart of their winning entry into the prestigious Smokefreerockquest competition, New Zealand's biggest original music platform for youth. They participated alongside 600 other acts last year, working within the restrictions around socials gatherings to participate in Smokefreerockquest 'On Screen' - an adaption of the live programme, working online via video submission.
About their winning performance in the 2020 Smokefreerockquest National Final, Ross Flahive (content director at ZM and Flava) said they are the whole package. "Their songs are well structured with catchy hooks, nice harmonies and well thought out lyrics. Their performance reflects an act that is ready to go."
On what is next for the pair, Brody says their goal is to keep writing and maturing with their sound: "We’re at the perfect age to explore what sort of music we want to make and put out, and we really want to work with as many people as we can in order to learn more about songwriting. It’s still crazy to us that we won Smokefreerockquest, and we’re so grateful for the entire experience. It gave us an amazing opportunity to record and release this single, but more than that - it made us feel so excited to keep writing. We're excited to see where this journey takes us."
With their winning prize package, which included a NZ On Air New Single grant and $3k worth of music gear from the NZ Rockshop, the pair were able to fully record the song and film a video. Open Up was recorded at Parachute Studios with producer Simon Gooding. About their experience recording Ben spoke of exciting things to come, saying "since then - all we want to do is record music in the studio. We’ve definitely got the recording buzz."
