Hailing from Kirikiriroa, heavy two piece Empress officially release their second single No Tomorrow on March 16th 2021. The band released their first single, Sailing The Seas of Grease in October 2020 after forming at the end of 2018.
The band describe their sound as ‘Doomy Reggae’ and this track certainly reflects that.
At nearly four minutes long, the piece is a journey rooted in heavy riffs and timing changes.
The track begins with the chorus, a chunky riff and simply the words No Tomorrrow yelled over the top, before taking the vibe and tempo right down to a clean, jazz-influenced verse section.
The bands lyrics tell a dark tale of substance use, heavy partying, and simply living like there is ‘No tomorrow’ – this sentiment is reflected in the video, which features a character who is at a party and having a bad time. As the song progresses into what can only be described as an off-beat punk-reggae bridge, the dark lyrics repeated with increasing urgency and volume, the actor begins a descent into madness, before returning to the party for one final chorus.
Empress are releasing their track via Bandcamp, Spotify and YouTube, and a Facebook livestream, followed by a show in Hamilton with Elemeno P on 19th March.
