It is going to be a busy few months for the Arch Hill Recordings crowd. It's about time for some kind of update.
Pine are near completion of the debut album called Longplayer. It will be released at the end of May/early June and distributed by FMR in NZ. Before that, a single called Beaten Again (thanks to NZOA for the New Recording grant), will end up with radio stations around the country.
Longplayer sees the stripped back Christchurch three find further development on debut ep Speeding. Their simple 1960's flavored melodies and understated grooves just keep getting better. Less is more. The album itself has thirteen tracks, including the b-net favorite Make Way for the King. Longplayer was put together with the help of studio whizz Nick Abbott (Pluto, Goldenhorse, Meterman etc). Early prototype experiments emerging from the Arch Hill Art Department may take CD packaging to new levels. Look out.......
.... look out also for Pine who will be getting around the traps, playing Longplayer to the people.
If Fang hadn't decided to get less noisy, then they'd be upsetting the neighbors. Arch Hill Studios is temporarily housed in one Fang members flat basement. However, this works out quite conveniently for recording album number two. And Arch Hill Studio Captain Ed Case (Lanky, Dave Mulcahy, Fang) lives just around the corner. The sound of the dozen or so songs recorded thus far is more low key, hypnotic, dark, minimalist, keyboardy with even a (very occasional) touch of Lee and Nancy action. Steve Rae of the Subliminals has been hauled in and is laying his snakey wah guitar all over the show, giving things a gritty sexy feel. Listen out for new song Man From the South. All going to plan there should be something album sized around June. There has been talk of Fang crawling out of the carpet hole and hitting the live stage - perhaps as alter ego White Fang.
