With the 14th annual Fringe Festival successfully wrapped up, the New Zealand Fringe Festival today announced the appointment of a new director.
Karen Blyth, the director for the past two years, is departing for overseas. She will be replaced by Mark Westerby, who served as Fringe ’05 director.
Miranda Clayton, chair of the Fringe Arts Trust, said that Mr Westerby’s appointment ensured the Fringe was in capable and experienced hands, although Ms Blyth would be greatly missed.
"Karen has been an absolute treasure for the Fringe over these past two years,” said Ms Clayton. “We loved her 'can do, will do and it's-done- already!' attitude.
“She made everything, in Karen’s words, 'sweet' for the Fringe Arts Trust board.
"She chose a fantastic team to work with her and they all helped to make Fringe 07 exceptional. We wish her well on her travels abroad and we know that whatever she does in her future, she'll be 'swwweeeetttt!'."
Ms Blyth thanked the board and the wider arts community for the opportunity to steer one of the biggest cultural events in New Zealand.
“Fringe has been a massive and awesome task for me and my two Fringe office gangs over the last two festivals,” she said. “I will be sad to not be involved in ‘08 but I know that the festival is in great hands – Mark Westerby and the Fringe community in NZ are going to keep on rockin’ it!
“Thanks to our loyal sponsors and supporters, Fringe is in a great place – it’s going to keep on getting bigger, better and brighter.”
Mr Westerby said he looked forward to returning to the Fringe Festival for 2008.
“The Fringe holds a very special and important place in the New Zealand arts scene and I’m excited about getting stuck in to carry on the great work that the team has continued over the years,” he said. “Fringe ‘08: it’s gonna be great!”
