SPAWTS is an alternative band with post-punk, indie-rock and garage influences from Tamaki Makaurau / Auckland, New Zealand. Mixing their own pop sensibilities and sonic tangents, SPAWTS is led by Kieran Ormandy (Guitar and Vocals), Jamie Hannah (Drums) and Sam Austin (Guitar), who are joined live by Jake Love (Bass).
Clicks & Whistles signifies a new era of the band as they continue to craft their DIY sound with a strong focus on songwriting & melody. Clicks & Whistles offers an eclectic mix of style and influence, pushing the quintessential SPAWTS sound into unfamiliar territory. Lyrically taking you on a journey through self sabotage, expired circumstances & broken friendships with a driving pulse of existential optimism.
SPAWTS will be celebrating the EP release with shows in Auckland on April 30th at 605 Morningside Drinkery & Christchurch on May 28th at Darkroom.
Since the release of 2019's AV1 members Kieran Ormandy (Guitar/Vocals) & Jamie Hannah (Drums) have welcomed a new core member to the group. Sam Austin joined the band onstage playing guitar for promotion around their debut album but it soon became apparent his ear for arrangement, chord progressions & harmony could bring a refreshing touch to the sound Ormandy & Hannah had already established. Austin’s knack for production, mixing & mastering proved vital in the current pandemic as a string of lost shows meant future recording plans had to be scrapped in favour of an in house approach.
Clicks & Whistles has been a process of refinement for the band. A more collaborative, in-person approach has injected more cohesive structures & melodies into Ormandy’s songwriting. Shying away from comfortable sonic tricks of old & leaning heavily towards vocal arrangement, execution & emotion. Hannah backed up this sentiment on the drums giving more space & clarity to his playing while linking up with Austin who filled in on bass as the band tracked their parts together live with engineer Nick Moyle at his garage studio in Waiuku.
