The wait is almost over for fans of Manawatu based country singer and songwriter Renée Therése, who releases her debut country album Better With Friends on May 22nd 2021. Providing one last taste test of what is yet to come, she releases the final single from this project - The Train Man, which was written in 2020 during New Zealand’s level 4 Covid lockdown.
Inspired by a very passionate train driving friend of hers, the song tells the story of a ‘train driving cowboy’ who loves to listen to country music while he drives his train.
He is one of our hardworking essential workers responsible for delivering freight across the country, whilst the majority of the population are expected to stay home during the nationwide lockdown.
The music video, filmed mainly in the Manawatu area by local Feilding resident Rob Edwards, features the actual train driver the song was written about, his partner, and their 3 month old baby. This brings a real sense of authenticity to the song, its lyrics and the narrative associated with it. There really is a train driving cowboy who loves country music, and this video introduces you to the man who inspired the song - Shannan Stafford-Hyde from Feilding. Both Shannan and Renée are members of the Feilding Country Music Group and became acquainted due to their shared love of singing and playing country music.
With the amazing drone shots, the video is almost an advert for KiwiRail, showcasing beautiful footage of their trains that foamers (train loving fanatics) will love. Also featured are shots from inside the train, as the videographer was given permission to film from inside the cab beside Shannan as he drove the train.
The Train Man was recorded remotely with four key people at three separate locations around New Zealand. Mike McCarthy of Manuka Studios in Orewa produced the song. The fiddle was also recorded there by talented musician Nick Jones. The guitar was recorded in Matamata at Rusty Spur Records by musician and producer Michael Tipping who also happens to be the president of the NZ Country Music Association (NZCMA). All vocals were recorded by Renée on the family’s shared computer in her teenage son’s bedroom at her home in Palmerston North.
