Tomorrow marks the start of Aotearoa’s iconic NZ Music Month | Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa celebrating great local music for all New Zealanders - in every place, for every age, and in every genre. A huge range of new releases, exhibitions, artist tours and special events will be rolling out across Aotearoa during the month of May.

NZ Music Month’s Rodney Fisher commented: “I’m really excited to kick off the month with incredible local talent hitting the road and travelling right across the country. Already we know of hundreds of shows this May, with artists performing in 44 different towns and cities, and that number is growing every day. There’s also some awesome partnerships and events which shows a real sense of the music community across Aotearoa working together.”

Each week during May, the team at NZ Music Month | Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa will be sharing an e-newsletter to highlight what’s happening around the country.

Kicking off a bumper month of festivities is The Art of the Record, a travelling exhibition to showcase 21 iconic album covers. The exhibition opens at Tamaki Makaurau Auckland on May 1st at Monster Valley on Karangahape Road, before travelling to Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The hotly anticipated television series Waiata Anthems, celebrating some of our most loved Kiwi artists, including Che Fu, Bic Runga, Katchafire, Hollie Smith & Don McGlashan will air exclusively on TVNZ OnDemand from May 1st.

NZ Music Month | Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa will see a stellar line-up of local acts performing right across Aotearoa, with shows happening in a vast range of venues and regions. These Music Month gigs get underway tomorrow with The Veils performing at The Powerstation in Auckland and The Chills at Wakatu Hotel in Nelson. Other confirmed tours include Nadia Reid and her band, Miles Calder, and Harper Finn & LA Women.

This weekend will see an exciting range of events, including Dunedin’s annual Nook & Cranny Festival at the Public Library this Sunday 2nd May. The Christchurch Art Gallery is holding a launch concert on 1st May with an all Otautahi line-up of Ryan Fisherman, Violet French, Laura Lee Lovely & Simon Gregory, and the AV Club will be spinning records from their vinyl record stalls, so you can take some tunes home with you. Wellington Museum will be hosting Kei Whea Nga Tohora with performances by Amba Holly and Casual Healing, and DJ Antsman with ‘Aotearoa’s finest bangerz from the old skool to the niu skool’. W3 in Waiheke will have Lily Atu, Briar Ross, Princess Chelsea, Jemilah Ross-Hayes and Alisha Paul all playing at a fundraiser for Artworks Theatre.

NZ Music Month | Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa is run by the NZ Music Commission, with support from APRA AMCOS, Independent Music NZ, the Music Managers Forum, NZ On Air, Recorded Music NZ, SOUNZ and Te Mangai Paho. The purpose of NZ Music Month | Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa to celebrate music from New Zealand, and the people who make it.
