After an explosive entry into the New Zealand music scene, 18-year-old singer, songwriter, producer KEI (Keira Jonkers) is wasting no time in releasing her hard hitting debut single Working For The Devil. Performing her debut single on TVNZ’s Popstars secured her a Top 12 spot in the highly viewed TV show, with three grandiose nods from the panel deeming her the one to watch.
International pop sensation Kimbra was quick to comment on her outstanding performance saying she loved her “powerful lyrics and strong opening line” and “it makes me feel like I wanna get out of my seat and join in with you!”.
KEI draws her sound from R&B, jazz and rock elements and her musical influences range from Chris Cornell and Serj Tankien to H.E.R and Labrinth. Her impressive vocal delivery also made an impression on panellist Nathan King (Zed) who commented, “Strong voice, I love what you can do with it!”.
Joining SOLE Music Academy has helped develop KEI as an artist. With their valuable mentorship she has been able to develop her sound, music skills and industry knowledge as well as network with like-minded musicians and professionals and start to really gain confidence in the possibility of having a career in music. To help produce her debut single, SOLE teamed KEI up with Christchurch producer Tim Heeringa (PRINS). KEI loved this collaborative experience commenting, “I’ve really enjoyed being able to bounce ideas off another creator. I think it’s also very important when perfecting art, to get fresh ears (and eyes) on it, especially from someone who has successfully collaborated with other artists before you.”
KEI has big ambitions as a creator. As well as music, KEI is a keen artist designing her single artwork for her debut single Working For The Devil. She hopes her music will help people feel not so alone in the world and wants people to not only appreciate her work as a sound, but as an art form.
