The dreamy, feel-good I Am The Mirror is the first single, and the title track, from And That’s upcoming debut full-length album, which follows on from the critically acclaimed 2019 EP,This.
A introspective and personal song, I Am The Mirror, takes its inspiration from a greeting card quote:
“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” –Edith Wharton, “Vesalius in Zante,” 1902.
“The core of the song is about how I feel like a lot of people in my life look to me to be the light (the candle) when in reality I feel more like the mirror”, says Scott, who many will remember from the internationally successful Kiwi pop-rock band Kingston.
“I think I’m afraid of the responsibility of being the light to people, and also know that although people may look like they have it all ‘together’ on the outside, it’s not always the case. This song is me just finding my place in that candle/mirror equation.”
Accompanied by a video that’s no less compelling than the song, Scott - who was back at home in New Zealand visiting family over summer - teamed up with Kiwi creative Si Moore (Bayly&Moore) to bring the vision to life.
“Si and I had been talking for a while about making something together and he happened to have a couple of Super8 cameras around and some film so we got talking. We decided to go all in on the mirror concept. I got an all mirror suit, I covered my childhood guitar in adhesive mirror and we just got out there and had a bunch of fun.”
I Am The Mirror marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for And That, which launched in 2019 with the EP, This, produced by Zac Farro (Paramore, Halfnoise, BeccaMancari) and mixed by Carlos de la Garza (Cold War Kids, M83, Cherry Glazerr) and released by Zac’s own label, Congrats Records.
Scott teamed up again with Zac for his debut record, and explains that the single I Am The Mirror was among the second wave of songs he wrote and it quickly became the sonic benchmark for the LP.
“We tracked something like eight songs in four days - and this was the first song we did in Zac’s new studio in Los Angeles. We more or less finished it in a day and it set a new level for the songs we’d already tracked and the ones that were to come.”
Easy going, feel-good and uncomplicated is the And That mantra and that’s exactly what fans can expect from the 11-track I Am the Mirroralbum, set for release in May. It all kicks off today with a title track that will have you hankering for more.
