On Tuesday the 1st of May, NZ Music Month not only turns seven but is throwing one big party for New Zealand. In keeping with the nationwide nature of NZ Music Month, we're going all the way to Christchurch and inviting everyone along to attend for free!
The city boasts a long tradition of producing NZ Music royalty from Ray Columbus, Max Merritt, and Chants R&B in the 60s to, more recently, Salmonella Dub, The Feelers, and Bic Runga, as well as this year's local chart-toppers Atlas and Dukes, MTV Kickstart's NZ winners. Christchurch is also home to one of the country's iconic music venues - the Dux de Lux, closing in on its 30th anniversary as a mainstay of the city's music scene. There's no better Christchurch venue at which to catch another night of great NZ Music, but who's playing you ask?
Headlining is the mighty Fur Patrol. It has been a long time since we saw them play (it was over 2 ½ years ago!). Now the band has become a three piece and this May they are releasing a shiny new EP entitled 'Long Distance Runner'. Pop along to the Dux on the 1st to check out all of your Fur Patrol favourites and their much anticipated new songs from the up and coming EP.
Joining them is fellow Christchurch band Pine. Their music has been described as "riot music for quiet people", and after their recent lounge tour of the nation they are looking forward to helping kick off NZ Music Month in style. Look out for their new EP '12 Hour Collision' out mid May which features 7 new songs, 2 live tracks and some filmic goodness from their tour of NZ living rooms.
Also on the bill are local heroes Dukes. After a busy time winning Ozzie fans over and a live gig on a 747(!), they are back in their home town to join the celebrations. They will be performing songs from their up and coming sophomore album due out late this year this is a band that you should definitely keep an eye on!
Adding even more reason to come party are youngsters Black Market Art, described variously as 'Christchurch's latest must-see band' and 'bloody good'. They've wowed Cantabrians, toured the South Island with Connan and the Mockasins, and now lay it down in fine fashion for NZ Music Month.
Not content with this hefty line up of great Christchurch live acts we also have O.G. (Central Records) and guests in their very own NZ Music DJ Lounge bolstering the ranks of top local talent on offer.
