Flying Nun Records turns 40 this year, and AudioCulture will be celebrating their birthday over the next few months.
We are starting with something quite special: an interactive map and timeline of the label's early years in Christchurch, before it shifted to Auckland in 1988. Visit the map/timeline here.
Find out the name of the venue where Roger Shepherd discovered The Clean, which Christchurch street housed the first Flying Nun office, who the label’s first full-time staffer was (the answer may surprise you), and much more...
Created by our resident map guru Gareth Shute, this new map and timeline shows some of the locations that were important to the origins and growth of Flying Nun Records in Christchurch up until Roger Shepherd and Gary Cope moved the label north in 1988. The personal addresses shown are only approximate locations to respect the privacy of those now living there.
The map is best viewed on a desktop/laptop/tablet.
And just as a wee aside, AudioCulture went live on May 31st 2013, so today is our eighth birthday!
We also have a couple of other things that might be worth a look.
The Weekly AudioCulture Quiz
Try your luck and test your New Zealand music knowledge with the weekly AudioCulture quiz, set by a different quizperson each Monday.
When stars collide: The Rock n' Roll Rendezvous
Rock & Roll Rendezvous is our brand new cartoon series about strange encounters experienced by New Zealand musicians. The caricatures are by musician and illustrator Chris Grosz, who has created designs for the likes of Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, U2, Elvis Costello, Mi-Sex, Dragon, Midge Marsden and Mother Goose, among many others. This week: Sam Hunt and Johnny Cash.
