The “five piece” duo made up of ‘H’ Kaa and Tim Driver say the song at face value is written about lead vocalist and drummer Henare ‘H’ Kaa’s own experiences and struggles with ADHD.

Inspired by a conversation Kaa had with another person afflicted with ADHD and their experience with it, the song became somewhat of a platform as a means of reaching other sufferers and letting them know that they are not alone.

“But on a deeper level it’s about all of us”, says the duo.

“There’s a party in all of our heads – from the constant background hum of internal chatter to the deepest inner turmoil. We all have our own house party in our heads, and everybody’s party has different guests – and not all of them are welcome.”

Party In My Head strays a little from their usual sound, offering a light reggae feel to it with neo-soul chords and a highly infectious chorus hook by Emily C. Browning.

Emily C. Browning is an absolute weapon of a musician and producer. We have worked with Emily pretty much since our inception as a band – she came on our very first tour with us and has played so many shows with us in the past. To be honest, we just can’t find a guitarist who compliments our sound as well as she does!”

Party In My Head is written by Henare ‘H’ Kaa, with additional input from Tim Driver, and production credits to Dillastrate, Emily C. Browning and Thom O’Connor (Orange Studio, O’Sound Studio).

Dillastrate’s second EP, Narrative, due out August 13 will offer a diverse collection of sound with Party In My Head being slightly different to the rest of the tracks on the EP.

Taking its name from responses to Dillastrate’s musical output as being “stories”, the EP captures a narrative and mental/emotional blueprint of the lives of the individual members of the band from its inception to the present. The nature of the EP itself takes the story inside and Tim’s heads and attempts to explain the inner workings of the mind.

Dillastrate has been making waves since bursting onto the local music scene with their 2017 EP, Black Diamond. Since then they have toured New Zealand extensively and supported some of the country’s biggest names including Sons of Zion and Katchafire.

Catch Dillastrate in Auckland tonight, performing live at Cassette 9 with Laughton Kora, in Queenstown on June 12 for free at Yonder Bar and GoLive Festival in Christchurch on July 24.
