We are pleased to be able to present to you Aotearoa’s youngest singer/songwriter, Aanvi S, who has just released her debut original single at the age of just nine years old.
Aanvi has always had a strong interest in music, but this was not recognized by others until March last year when she composed and recorded her first song. Encouraged by family and friends, Aanvi kept working on her own material and in just three months had written some 15 more. She was enrolled in formal music training (western vocal, piano and music band) at Eliette's Music Academy in Albany in June 2020, which was where Vesa Luma (her vocal teacher) recognised Aanvi's songwriting abilities. In November she won the best songwriter of the year award at the academy and also commenced learning Indian Classical vocal (Carnatic) music from Shalini Muthukumar (India, student of Sri T. M. Krishna). Aanvi transcends comfortably between both forms of music and shows very strong language abilities in singing songs in Sanskrit, Telugu or Tamil. She also is able to keep up with the different styles of singing and tunes required from both forms of music.
Earlier this year she participated and won the songwriting competition at Eliette's Music Academy. It was Vesa who also guided Aanvi through the technical process of songwriting and composition, the result being Music Is My Religion. Luan, her piano teacher, worked with Aanvi on the arrangements and assisted in recording the song which has now been made available for the wider audience.
