Gold Coast-based, New Zealand-born artist Saint Lane has today unveiled his charismatic new single and video for Toothbrush - produced by Danny Duke (Baker Boy, Dallas Woods), and Chunkyluv (OneFour, William Singe).
Toothbrush, opens with suave guitar chords, before the texture is gelled with fanciful bass and a luminous beat, while Lane’s graceful vocals float fluidly above. Decorative production and poetic purity combine as the track streams into an elegant chorus, rich in melody and instrumentation. Rhythmic improvisations and audio samples permeate the mix while the lyrics disclose a level of profound sentiment.
The Kiwi-born rapper, Saint Lane, talks about the meaning behind Toothbrush:
“I was in an uber, and the driver asked what I did for work, so I told him I was a songwriter. He then asked, ‘What's the key to writing a good song?’ to which I replied, ‘I guess you'd want the listener to resonate with the words to a degree, take them back to a time in their life maybe.’ And he said ‘That's so crazy, because when my favourite rappers Young Stunners release a song, I think they are writing about me personally. I just relate to their music so much.’”
“I asked him what has been happening in his life and he said he met his girlfriend in university before COVID and they signed a year lease together after only knowing each other for two months. When he moved in, he smoked a joint and his girlfriend freaked out and broke up with him saying she could never be with a ‘drug addict’ so now they just co-exist in the house until the lease is up. He dropped me off to the studio and I wrote a song about his situation.”
To coincide with the release, Saint Lane will be touring the East-Coast of Australia. This continues on from previous appearances alongside Lime Cordiale, Earl Sweatshirt, Baker Boy, Dune Rats and J.I.D (USA). The self-made musician has also featured at Ultra Korea alongside Skrillex and Rick Ross.
Previous singles have been widely embraced by the likes of Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, The Edge, Mai FM, NIU FM, ZM, Apple Music 1 Radio, NPO 3FM (NDL), FBi Radio, 4ZZZ, 3RRR, Spotify and Apple Music. He has also received online praise from The Needle Drop, NME, Billboard (USA), Pilerats, The Guardian, Sniffers (NZ), GQ, Red Bull, Pedestrian TV and MTV Upload, where he was featured as ‘Upload of the Week’, and ‘Best of 2020’.
Saint Lane has established himself as a dynamic potency in the Australian and New Zealand music industry. Since his inception, Lane has collaborated with Andrew Dawson (Kanye West’s producer) and Mike Malichicoff (Kids See Ghosts' producer), and locally featured on tracks with Bootleg Rascal, Robbie Miller, and Travy P.
