It is Wednesday 16th of May - Day #16 of NZ Music Month 2007!
There are so many great things happening this month that I thought would sneak in a mid-week update with a few extra things that are coming up this NZ Music Month!
The results are back from Judith Tizard’s inaugural Music Month Quiz. This year Ruth Dyson was the winner, scoring 99%! There was only half a point between her and Trevor Mallard, Lianne Dalziel & Simon Power. Sue Moroney got a special mention for completing the quiz without assistance… good on her!
Hotel Cabana Thru the Decades by Lee Pritchard is a book and album about Napier’s most famous Art Deco Hotel. Now a hotel, it was once New Zealands’ premiere rock venue and dubbed by many musicians as ‘best gig in the country.’ ‘Thru the Decades’ is a chronicle, including rare recordings, autographs, photographs and stories from the likes of Midge Marsden, Sam Hunt, Jordan Luck, Graham Brazier and Andrew Fagan. This Saturday the launch party will be held at the old Cabana building, where the party will become the final chapter of the book. There will be live music again for one night only after a 12 year absence, with a few surprises in the band line up!
Tomorrow night check out The Managers Album Release Party! Legendary ska band The Managers have just released their brand new album ‘Take It or Leave It’ and are playing at the Kings Arms Tavern with support from The Poisoners and new reggae sensations Tenement Yard. Catch them live and pick up their shiny new CD.
Electronic music is enjoying its share of the limelight this month, with up-and-coming producer and DJ Luke Walker releasing his second solo EP, ‘Mayhem’. The Mayhem release party will be held this Friday, 18th at Calibre. The night sees Walker join some of Auckland’s finest DJs. Pop along for a boogie and a good excuse to pick up another kiwi album this month.
MTV and Air New Zealand combined forces to bring you an exclusive for NZ Music Month. The world’s first MTV Mile High Gig en route to the MTV Australia Video Music Awards! From a mad idea to a raucous anarchic reality, MTV New Zealand’s flagship show Full Tank brought you the behind the scenes footage of the rehearsal and a kickass performance from Op Shop at the gate party. Then we rocked out with New Zealand MTV Kickstart Winners - the Dukes and Goodnight Nurse at 37,000 feet, the highest in-flight gig EVER. The Dukes music video was also filmed on-board the flight which can be viewed by tuning into MTV, Channel 60 SKY Digital.
This Thursday 17th May is time once again to bust out the swat hat and brush up your knowledge of all things NZ Music. It is the annual Radio One / dunedinmusic.com NZ Music Quiz. Display your encyclopedic knowledge of NZ sounds, impress your friends, make your grandma proud and your enemies despondent. It is free to enter your team and all happening at ReFuel, Dunedin from 7.30pm.
After releasing a mini album on Monday entitled ‘Adore Tu Ser’, False Start is heading to the Auckland Art Gallery this Saturday afternoon for a free 3pm performance. Pop along to check out their new material and check out - http://youtube.com/watch?v=IkKJkAN99eg – for their ‘album purchase incentive’ competition.
Julien Dyne of the Opensouls is releasing his ‘Phantom Limbo’ EP this coming Monday. To experience a taster pop along to the release party at Khuja Lounge, Auckland this Saturday night.
Sunday Star Time’s is running a big NZ Music Month Competition. To enter, simply rattle off your Top Five New Zealand albums or EPs, of any style, from any era, with a couple of pithy lines on why you think each record deserves its place in your list. The most entertaining email to reach [email protected] by 5 pm on Monday May 21st wins an ‘instant New Zealand record collection” of over 70 CDs plus a phenomenally fetching NZ Music Month hoodie.
Watch out in coming days for the mammoth list of kiwi albums in store or on their way this month!!!
