Diggy Dupe pays tribute to Nesian Mystik with weekend party starter 'Weon'

06 August 2021 - 0 Comments

Hip hop young gun and Pacific Music Award Nominee (Best Pacific Hip Hop Artist) Diggy Dupe signals that the grind of the working week is coming to a close and celebrates the start of the good times with Weon. This latest release with producer Tamagotchi and mixed by SmokeyGotBeatz samples Nesian Mystik’s unforgettable hit It’s On.

“It’s Friday, you’ve done more hours than you were meant to and now it’s time to reward yourself for all that hard work. You send the cheeky “Upto” to your close friends as you buy a box, then you wait to see who takes the bait. Whether someone does or doesn’t isn’t really a problem, because the fact of the matter is - Weon,” Diggy says.

“That’s pretty much it, something to get your after work drinks started. Of course I couldn’t help but speak about all the hard work the team and I have put in ourselves and how far we’ve come. You could say it’s a continuation of That’s Team, we always gotta celebrate the little wins.”

Like the single, Connor Pritchard’s video for Weon brings a fresh take on the familiar. Nesian Mystik fans will recognise an affectionate tribute to the group that paved the way for Diggy Dupe and other young Polynesian musicians in Central Auckland.

“We wanted to pay homage to Nesian Mystik so we recreated a lot of scenes from their videos. It’s crazy to see how much things have and haven’t changed over the years,” Diggy says.

“Getting the all clear from Nesian Mystik was a blessing, these are the guys we looked up to when we were kids. They paved the way by showing us that it’s perfectly fine to be yourself, and that was us too, a bunch of Polynesian kids from Grey Lynn who love rap.”

Weon is the first track from Diggy Dupe since he dropped That’s Me, That’s Team, close to a year ago - he wrote and recorded the demo for the track the night the album came out. While it has taken time to clear the sample from the iconic track, the track shows that it has been well worth the wait, and Diggy promises that the second half of 2021 will be hectic, with more of his own releases on the way, plus the original music soundtrack for The Panthers alongside Troy Kingi and choicevaughan which is out on Universal on 13 May.

Weon is out on today via streaming platforms on his own label Team Mates Limited. Diggy Dupe supports SWIDT at the Studio on Friday 3 September.
