The Topp Twins’ “Flowergirls and Cowgirls” has taken out the Tui for New Zealand’s Best Country Music Album of 2007.
The award was announced in Gore tonight (June 1) at the NZ Country Music Awards.
The other finalists were Warren Love for “Warren Love Band” and Johnny Possum’s Good Time Hootin’ Band’s debut CD “Tickets”.
For the Topp Twins –twin sisters Jools and Lynda Topp – it was a second Tui in a professional career dating back much more than 30 years. The much loved musical and comedy duo won a Best Country Album Tui in 2001 for “Grass Highway”
In addition to receiving the accolades in Gore, Jools and Lynda will be acknowledged at the 42nd New Zealand Music Awards in Auckland in October.
The Topp Twins have built a successful performance career based on extraordinary diversity and their unique blend of original music, comedy, yodelling and audience participation delivers a total entertainment experience unlike any other act.
NZ Music Awards spokesperson Campbell Smith says Topp Twins fans around the world will be celebrating their win.
“Linda and Jools have built an amazing following not only in New Zealand but also in Europe and Australia.
“This is a fantastic win by a superbly-talented duo., whose catalogue is now a New Zealand music treasure. This great album adds to that heritage.
“Flowergirls & Cowgirls” is dedicated to the memory of the twins' Grandmother Emily Hoad Dalziel and is about family, affinity with the land and a desire to be free. It is described as a blend of country folk blues, with a pacific feel.
The RIANZ Best Country Music Album Award has been presented since 1983. The inaugural recipient was Suzanne Prentice.
