Te Whanganui a Tara-based NahBo drops their debut album, Ruptured, a politically left-leaning explosion of an album based deeply on the experiences of musician/activist Taranaki Ah Young-Grace (Ngati Ruanui, Ngati Tuwaretoa), who penned the tracks in their home studio during lockdown 2020.
NahBo, a character created by the classically trained multi-instrumental Taranaki as a protective alias to feel safe in sharing and creating music again after trauma, has blossomed into something beautiful, vulnerable, and explosive.
A collection of songs exploring some of the many aftereffects of colonisation (eg, poor mental health, racism, sexism and addiction), Ruptured is a deeply personal listening (and often learning) experience.
"A lot of these lyrics are pulled from, or inspired by conversations I would have with flatmates, close friends, or my old therapist, and I believe strongly in writing what you know.
"So I was writing and recording in lockdown thinking, "This'll go down a treat. All my mates love this one about Cindy. People will get it, right? Yeah, totally". I have quickly learned whole performing this album live that a lot of people not only don't get it, but strongly disagree. Lots of people DO get it, but even that exists on a spectrum.
"I thought my lyrics were chill, and that perhaps my personal experience was a little more universal, but apparently not, and as much as I feel like I've moved on from the depth of feeling I had while writing these songs, they're all still parts of me, and it's scary to put that shit out there" - Taranaki Ah Young-Grace
A release; a letting go; a shedding. A time to start again.
