Venom Dolls // Urban Exploring and Playground Slides Create New Music Video

17 September 2021 - 0 Comments

Venom DollsDon't Wanna Be was birthed during a spontaneous mid-practice jam at the band’s second meeting. It was then they knew, "F**k yeah, this is going to work." Recorded and mixed at guitarist Carawei's studio, Milky Avenue, it formed the first single on The Venom Dolls EP. After being mastered by Scallywag Records, they set about creating a music video with the help of Lane-Andrews Productions. West Auckland became the backdrop of the video, with filming being done at Bethells Beach, a local kindergarten, and an abandoned warehouse that they definitely had permission to film at. Showcasing plenty of personality and drummer Summah's extensive wardrobe, they wanted a fun concept to offset the depressive episode featured in the lyrics.

Since forming at the end of 2020, Venom Dolls have kept busy invading local venues and adding to the growing list of NZ women pushing their way into the scene. One week after release, tracks from their debut EP have been played on RDU 98.5FM (reaching number 5 on the Te Ahi Top 10 this week), 95bFM's Hard Fast and Heavy show, and Three D Radio, a community radio station in Adelaide for which they've been included on the Top 20+1 most played new releases. Taking heavy inspiration from other loud women such as Babes in Toyland and Destroy Boys, their sound fuses classic old school punk energy with hints of the metal, pop punk and blues tunes they devoured in adolescence. “Genres are weird, we just play what feels right for the song”, remarks bassist and vocalist Jessica Frank.

They have a host of upcoming gigs, including their now postponed EP release gig at Cupid's Bar. Other gigs include Sweet Treats at Whammy Bar, Lord of the Ding with The First Child and Late to Chelsea, and a tour to Hamilton, with dates to be reconfirmed pending alert levels.

“Can't get enough!” - Arrow Browne, Three D Radio.

"So much to hear! From the lyrics to the melodies and the delivery. This is a really strong debut." - Trevor Faville, Date Month Year.
