Aotearoa’s very own hit-maker Kings today reveals his Waiata Anthems offering – the stirring Pohewatia which aptly celebrates Māori excellence and features the delicate, dreamy vocals of wahine toa, Theia.

Pohewatia sits alongside an esteemed list of songs and fellow New Zealand artists who have released songs as part of the week-long Waiata Anthems movement, an industry-wide initiative, which celebrates new waiata and honours the champions and pioneers of te reo Māori and supports the emergence of a bilingual musical landscape.
Kings and Theia co-wrote Pohewatia with Brandon Haru and Leon Blake at the first-ever APRA Māori Songhubs held in Waimarama at the end of 2020 and curated by Joel Little.
The unstoppable Kings has gone on to smash hit after hit since the release of his breakthrough 2016 track Don’t Worry Bout It. His studio albums have continued to raise the bar, with platinum-selling hits, awards and accolades coming thick and fast. Kings’ recent single Help Me Out with Sons of Zion has been a radio hit, as well as clocking up millions of streams across all platforms.
Alt-pop queen Theia has received international critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard, Clash and Pigeons and Planes. When she’s not making high-energy bangers as Theia, she’s working on her te reo Māori project Te Kaahu, which has just been handpicked by Apple Music editors from around the world as the latest artist for the Up Next Local Series.
