Evermore, Opshop, Hollie Smith and Brooke Fraser dominate the finalist lists for this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, announced today at Auckland’s Langham Hotel.

Evermore and Opshop are both finalists in five categories, Hollie Smith and Brooke Fraser four, The Mint Chicks and Liam Finn three, and Shapeshifter and The Black Seeds two.

Also announced today was the first ever recipient of the New Zealand Herald Legacy Award – Johnny Devlin. Devlin will be honoured at the glittering Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards ceremony at Auckland’s ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge® on October 18. Devlin will also be inducted in to the recently announced New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

Awards spokesperson Campbell Smith says the list of finalists reflects the healthy state of New Zealand music.

“The finalists this year come from a strong and broad stable of Kiwi artists producing great music,” he says. “October 18 is our chance to honour them and continue to show our support for local music.”

The Tuis presented at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards 2007 ceremony are for:
Nokia Album of the Year, Vodafone Single of the Year, Steinlager Pure Best Group, Best Male Solo Artist, Mazda Best Female Solo Artist, KIWI FM Breakthrough Artist of the Year, The Warehouse Highest Selling NZ Album, Highest Selling NZ Single, C4 Best Music Video, PPNZ Best Rock Album, Best Urban/Hip Hop Album, Best Dance/Electronica Album, Best Aotearoa Roots Album, Best Maori Album, Best Gospel/Christian Album, Best Classical Album, Vodafone People’s Choice, NZ on Air Radio Airplay Record of the Year.

No finalists are announced for the Highest Selling NZ Single, The Warehouse Highest Selling NZ Album, NZ on Air Radio Airplay Record of the Year and International Achievement awards.

The Vodafone People’s Choice Award
Finalists for the highly coveted People’s Choice Award in 2007 are; Evermore, Brooke Fraser, Opshop, The Black Seeds and Shapeshifter.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite artist by TXT:

Voting opens on 17 September and closes at midnight on 16 October 2007. TXT votes are free for Vodafone costumers but cost 20c for Telecom customers. Voters can only vote once.

Everyone that votes in the Vodafone People’s Choice Award goes into the draw for a mega music prize pack including; $1500 Vodafone airtime, a trip for two to the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards including accommodation at The Langham Hotel, a Nokia mobile phone, CDs of all the finalists plus heaps more!

There is a limited number of tickets available for the public to buy to the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. Tickets are $47 including booking fee and available exclusively through ticketek. Tickets on sale from Friday 14 September.

Tuis awarded at separate functions throughout the year, and again recognised at the main gala event on October 18 are Best Folk Album, Best Pacific Music Album and Best Country Music Album.

The Best Jazz Album Tui is to be presented at the Wellington International Jazz Festival in November and the winner will be acknowledged at the New Zealand Music Awards 2008.
