Samuel Philip Cooper, 26-year-old solo contemporary pianist from Wellington, New Zealand, is excited to release a new single, A Perfect Vision, following his debut 18-song solo-piano album, Breaking the Silence, released in November last year.

This composition is more calming and soothing than many of those on his previous album. It’s an expression of where Samuel was mentally following the successful release of this earlier album, from which he has raised over $2,500 for the Voices of Hope Mental Health Charity through a Givealittle fundraiser and physical CD sales.
Specifically, A Perfect Vision was inspired by nights Samuel relaxed at home thinking about all the exciting and positive experiences to come in the short, medium and long term. However, he also says that these nights were opportunities to think about how to stay mentally resilient if struggles resurfaced.
“In early 2021, I was incredibly proud of my album and thrilled at the positive response I received. When taking time out and relaxing, I visualised what I would love to do with my music and was very excited about what the future might hold. But at the same time, I saw those quiet times as opportunities to think about strategies for how I could deal with any other mental set-backs or things that might negatively impact me achieving such visions. One night in January, I sat on the piano and improvised a melody with these feelings at the forefront of my mind, and liked how it came out.”
In May 2021, Samuel worked with producer Jonas Persson to record A Perfect Vision on a Grotian grand piano at Massey University Recording Studio in Wellington, where he recorded this and several other short/semi-structured compositions that will be released as singles over the next 12-18 months.
Through the release of this single, Samuel aims to continue his goal in raising awareness and money for mental health in order to help others speak up rather than silently suffer themselves. He had looked closely into performing a full concert in 2021 to continue raising more money for his fundraiser, but the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic put those possibilities aside, and he will instead look to do this in 2022. In the meantime, Samuel is performing a set at the ‘Let’s Get Comfy with Talking About Mental Health’ event on Saturday 13th November at the Lower Hutt Events Centre (12pm-10pm) hosted by PATPAT.
