Emerging Kiwi singer-songwriter BEXY has released the cruise-worthy single Not the One from her upcoming debut EP Wear My Wounds Like Armour in time for a summer roadtrip we all deserve.
BEXY wrote and produced the song with fellow musicians Will McGillivray and Ben Malone. Touted as ‘New Zealand’s newest indie-pop jewel’, by Happy Mag, BEXY’s debut EP follows global radio airtime and over 9 million streams on Spotify for singles to-date. And it is her first project alongside independent, indigenous-led Kiwi record label Five AM.
Wear My Wounds Like Armour explores confrontingly honest lyricism, with BEXY finding beauty in the real, the imperfect and shared Gen Z trauma.
“This EP is about being uncomfortably honest. Having the courage to fall. Say the wrong thing. Do the wrong thing,” says BEXY.
BEXY says Not The One helped her recover from heartbreak by convincing herself that she wasn’t into her friend.
“I wanted to express how powerful words of affirmations are. In the song, ‘not the one’ is repeated about forty times.”
Her favourite part of the song is the bridge, where she repeats the words: “Say it. ‘Til I. Believe it.”
“This song genuinely helped me to move on. I listened to it until I genuinely believed he wasn’t the one for me.”
Head of Five AM, Rory Noble, says BEXY is a unique talent and the whole team is excited to see her star rise this summer.
“Everyone needs a bit of BEXY right now. Especially our young people. Her EP is full of roadtrip worthy tunes and relatable lyrics that listeners can really feel into after a year of hard knocks.”
Christchurch-born BEXY first found success in 2019 with girlband Lacuna, playing at festivals like RNV and Nest Fest and opening for international bands like SKEGGS. After going solo, BEXY’s debut solo single release Wish We Had History, surpassed 4.9 million streams on Spotify alone.
BEXY’s debut EP Wear My Wounds Like Armour is set for release on December 10.
Not the One is available now on all streaming platforms.
