Hot on the heels of the release of Not the One, BEXY has dropped the heartbreak dance anthem Are You Mine?, the second single from her upcoming debut EP Wear My Wounds Like Armour.
BEXY wrote and produced the song with Ben Malone after recording a voice memo walking home from a ‘hectic’ night in Christchurch. She says the recording became the catalyst for the song and Malone later put snippets of it at the start of the track .
The lyrics chronicle the
anxieties of the early stages of a relationship which BEXY says manifest for
her from old wounds of rejection and betrayal.
“When I first started
seeing this person I had a pretty hectic relationship OCD and anxiety,” says
BEXY.
“I spent so much time googling what red flags look like, what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like. To the point where all I thought about was the relationship.”
BEXY says the topic of self-abandonment is also touched on in the song, and points to the lyric - “I'll be a mirror and a puppet of everyone I love”.
“I was so scared that I was going to abandon myself again to be loved,” she says.
“I hope when people listen to it they feel less lonely and that someone understands them.”
BEXY drew on musical references such as Girl in Red, beabadoobee and Goldmund in the composition of the song and says the process of making it with Ben was a crazy experience.
“It's almost magical. We have similar brains and love experimenting. We get completely lost in our own world. We never care about making some hit song.
“We just go to write and get to know our fears and anxieties and face them head on. The song was created so organically. There were no expectations or pressure. Just healing.”
Are You Mine? is available for streaming on all platforms from today. Also being released is the song’s music video, which was directed and edited by BEXY and captures her retracing her steps from the night that inspired the song.
